Courting Candle
The courting candle originated during the early American colonial times. Father would light the candle when daughter's suitor came. Then the candle burned down level with the top of the holder, the young man was gone. The father could adjust the height of the candle, and therefore the time, by rotating the holder up or down as he pleased.
